NEW: The Missoula Free-School Zine. (Untitled). The result of a workshop I taught in November 2004. It was a two-session crash course: one Saturday for brainstorming, the next Saturday for layout and photocopying. Contains poetry, prose, collage, and illustrations submitted by participants of the class. The cover is a stencil by Theo Ellisworth (each cover was spraypainted). I will be teaching more classes in the future and will post the creations, so check back...heres the free school site |

unarmed adventurous poetry journal: A poetry zine from St. Paul, MN. "Unarmed is an experimental poetry zine that comes out at least 6 times a year in the twin cities. With the idea that everyone is a poet, Unarmed seeks to demystify the stuffy world of underground poetry." | |
| Bomb Threat Checklist was a weekly poetry magazine (1994-1998) and there are a ton of issues. I once had a dream of making the splendid BTC page with lots of stuff to read but alas, too many exciting things have been going on with zines for me to focus very much on the past... Contains poetry, visual poetry, experimental poems, concrete poems, art, photocopy art, bad poetry, great poetry. | ||

Zines are a medium with so much potential. It's lazy thinking to automatically associate the word "zine" or "self published" with poor quality. Get rid of the prejudice instilled in you by elitist systems of thought. Art must always evolve, and the dominant aesthetic must always be challanged or risk blandness.Critical thinking is a must. Some zines suck. But so do some glossy-covered million-copy books. It would be pretty simplistic to assume all books suck just because of books like this. (ok i admit its secretly somewhat awesome in a kitch sort of way). |
